Risk assessments

Laser risk assessment and local rules: LCS-1 laser cutter

Group/location:

Security Group, Tamper Lab, SE09

Description of activity/workplace:

New Wave Research LCS-1 laser machining system, Nd:YAG pulsed laser (1 Hz), for use on Mitutoyo FS60Y microscope

Estimated output per pulse:

  • 532 nm, 5 mJ, 5 ns

Integrated Class 2 marker laser:

  • 670 nm, 1 mW

Identified hazards:

  1. Class 3B laser product (EN 60825)
  2. high-tension power supply

Whom those hazards affect:

Sergei Skorobogatov (supervisor: Ross Anderson)

Reasonably foreseeable outcome:

  1. eye or skin damage
  2. electrocution

Safe working procedure:

This laser is no longer in use and has been replaced with a newer and more flexible New Wave Research Quiklaze II laser machining system.

In the (currently not forseen) case that this laser is put into use again, the safe working procedure to be defined would very likely be identical to that described in the risk assessment for the Quiklaze II.

Assessment carried out by Markus Kuhn and Sergei Skorobogatov
