Celebrating 10 years of women@cl

The Computer Laboratory celebrated the 10th anniversary of women@CL on Wednesday 14th May, 2014. The programme for the day included a number of Minute Madness presentations featuring cutting edge research undertaken in the Computer Laboratory and beyond. The day concluded with the annual distinguished Wheeler lecture by Jeannette Wing, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research. The full programme of events held during the day is listed below:

Programme of events

13:00 – Lunch, mingling and welcome
Networking, informal discussions, games consoles playing throughout the afternoon.
14:00 – Minute Madness competition
A number of 60 second presentations on cutting edge research. Top presentations for a number of categories such as inspiration or entertainment won a prize.
14:30 – Refreshments, informal discussions/posters, networking
During refreshments, questions that were raised during the Minute Madness could be addressed; Like a poster session but without the posters! There was also a chance also to play on some old and new games consoles.
15:00 – Minute Madness competition

Jeannette Wing
16:00 – Wheeler lecture: “Computational Thinking”
The annual Wheeler lecture was given by Jeannette Wing, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research. Jeannette is on leave from Carnegie Mellon University, where she is President's Professor of Computer Science and twice served as the Head of the Computer Science Department. The lecture is named in honour of David Wheeler, an early member of the Laboratory and computer pioneer.
17:00 – Drinks reception and prize giving
