Bring a pen. Closed book, no electronics other than an approved calculator (calculator not essential). Assignment 4 – research/implementation project with written report (≤4000 words, ≤12 pages), comprising 50% of the mark.
Start: Monday 13 November 2023, 16:00 – Report due: Wednesday 29 November 2023, 16:00Students have a choice from two project topics:
- Reconstruction of displayed text from electromagnetic emissions of a digital video cable. Students are provided with a recording of the electromagnetic emissions of a digital video cable of a computer, and have to reconstruct an approximation of the image displayed on that computer.
- Implementation of a detector for prior JPEG compression. Students are provided with some example images and have to determine if, how and how often they have been JPEG compressed in their previous processing history.
Individual topic: Students keen to explore another project idea related to the course topics can offer a proposal by emailing and meeting the lecturer by 6 November 2023.
While drafts of assignments may appear here earlier, they may still change and may not yet have been covered by lectures before the indicated start date.
Feedback: All three assignments are designed such that it should be mostly obvious from the results whether you have solved the problem correctly, i.e. the main feedback for your submission will come from your own program's output. In cases where I can spot suggestions for improvement (bug fixes, better approaches, programming style, efficiency improvements, presentational suggestions), I will add such comments via Moodle within 21 days.
