Aims
The aim of this course is to broaden the experience of students by asking expert guest lecturers to discuss real-world issues which are of current interest to the computer community.
Lectures
The following topics were addressed in the 2008/09 academic year and are expected to form the basis of the 2009/10 year. However, in order to present topics that are timely, some lectures may be changed in the Easter term.
- Ubiquitous computing.
- Physical principles of RFID.
- Security protocols for RFID.
- Location determination.
- GPS.
- Modern cryptography.
- Computing for the future of the planet.
- Sustainable energy.
Objectives
At the end of the course students should
- realise that the range of issues affecting the computer
community is very broad;
- be able to take part in discussions on several subjects at the
frontier of modern computer engineering.
