More than Meets the Eye: The Impact of Media Quality on Users
Angela Sasse & John D. McCarthy
University College London
Networked multimedia technology has developed rapidly since the early 90s, when common perception was
that real-time audio and video could not be delivered over packet networks. Today, we are able to use
applications with streamed and interactive audio on our PCs, and soon will be able to receive them on our mobile phones.
Our long-term research interest has been to determine what levels or patterns of audio and video quality these new
applications and serviced need to deliver to be safe, effective and enjoyable in long-term use. The talk will summarise
results from recent lab experiments and field trials we have conducted, and present and discuss methods (physiological
responses and eyetracking) we employ in our research.
Dr M. Angela Sasse is a Reader in the Department of Computer Science at UCL. Since joining UCL in 1990, she has researched
design and usability issues of networked multimedia systems. She has led a number of EPSRC, EU, and industry-funded projects,
developing innovative networked multimedia applications, and running pilots and large-scale field trials to assess the impact
of those applications on a range of user groups and interaction tasks. http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/A.Sasse/
