Aims

The goal of the module is to make students aware of one of the most important changes happening in the world today: the transition of energy systems away from fossil fuels to renewables. Crucially, this will depend on deep integration of computing and communication technologies. The module will highlight key research achievements and areas for future work.

Syllabus

  • The legacy power system: generation, transmission, distribution
  • Power flow and optimal power flow
  • Data centres and their energy use
  • Renewable technologies: solar, wind, storage and their impact on the power grid
  • The role of computing and energy informatics 6. Key achievements in energy informatics.
  • Objectives

  • Familiarity with the legacy power grid and its analysis
  • Learning about renewable energy technologies
  • Appreciate the key role of computing in renewable-heavy grids
  • Understaning recent achievements in energy informatics and open research areas.
  • Assessment

  • Four 1,000-word essays (20% each) and one presentation (20%)

This module is shared with Part II of the Computer Science Tripos. Assessment will be adjusted for the two groups of students to be at an appropriate level for whichever course the student is enrolled on. Further information about assessment and practicals will follow at the first lecture.
