Alternatives to the Course Textbook

You may download, free of charge, "Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms", David J. C. MacKay, 2002. This the textbook for David MacKay's "Information Theory" course in the Physics Tripos.

Alternatively, you could consider buying a text book that is cheaper than Cover and Thomas. An example is:

However, be aware that an alternative book may miss out some of the syllabus.

The Computer Graphics and Image Processing text book "Digital Image Processing", R. C. Gonzalez and R. E. Woods has a whole chapter (chapter 6 of the first edition, chapter 8 of the second edition) on information theory and compression techniques as they relate to images. This is useful auxilliary material.
