Optical logic for network nodes
Tim Deegan
As optical transmission technology increases the
available communications bandwidth, traditional
router and switch designs have been unable to keep
pace. One approach which has been suggested for
solving this problem is the use of high-speed
optics in the core routers and switches, replacing
some of the functions performed by electronics
today. While most of this research is aimed at
replacing only the data-path components, in the
longer term it may be feasible to replace
control-path elements as well, using all-optical
logic.
This talk will present an overview of the kinds of
optical logic gates which could be used for such an
approach, and a brief look at how they can be used.
