Overview and Interests

Frank Stajano is Professor of Security and Privacy, a Fellow of Trinity College and a member of the Digital Technology Group and the Security Group. He has taught undergraduate courses on many topics, both in this department and at Engineering, including security, computer architecture, communications, ubiquitous computing, verilog, assembly language and the catch-all "additional topics". He currently teaches algorithms and discrete mathematics.

His research interests revolve primarily around three interconnected themes: systems security, privacy in the electronic society and ubiquitous computing. His works on ubicomp authentication (Resurrecting Duckling, with Ross Anderson) and on location privacy (Mix Zones, with Alastair Beresford) have over 1500 citations each.

His high level mission is to make the digital society fair for non-techies. To this end his primary research project, generously funded by an ERC grant, is Pico: liberating humanity from passwords. He was also an investigator in the Deterrence of Deception project (with Ross Anderson and others) and he has previously investigated the psychology of scam victims (with Paul Wilson). He is the author of the first book on IoT security, "Security for Ubiquitous Computing" (Wiley, 2002). A popular public speaker, he has given over 80 invited talks in four continents.

Before his academic appointments he worked in industry, gaining first-hand experience of start-up companies, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and patents. His academic research therefore maintains a strong practical orientation. He has been an employee of Google, Toshiba, AT&T, Oracle and Olivetti. He was elected a Toshiba Fellow in 2000.

Outside computers he is a martial arts instructor (kendo 3rd dan and BKA Level 3 regional coach) and a comics scholar. He is a contributor to Fantagraphics's Carl Barks Library and Floyd Gottfredson Library.
