Overview and Interests

Weisi Guo joined the University of Cambridge in 2001 as an undergraduate in Engineering.  He continued to do his masters degree in computer vision for robotics, before joining Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile International in 2005 as a 2/3G Engineer in the Air Interface. 

In 2007, Weisi returned to Cambridge to start a PhD in cooperative wireless communications.  Cooperation between users to exploit spatial diversity to combat channel fading was considered.  This has applications in both new standards for mobile and fixed wireless communications, as well as sensor networks.  He completed his PhD in 2010 and joined Swansea University to carry out joint industrial and academic research on energy efficient mobile networks.  Funded by Mobile VCE and EPSRC, the Green Radio project investigates how current and future mobile networks can reduce power consumption, whilst improving the quality of service. 

Weisi is also a winner of the EPSRC Young Millennium Scientist of the year.


[Academic Research]

Cooperative Communication: How to characterize and optimize the performance of multiple cooperative users, using feasible channel codes and modulation schemes.  Methods of optimization include partner selection in the presence of cooperation cost, user behaviour in evolutionary game theory, and adaptive power allocation.  Comparison is drawn between this work and those that assume idealized Gaussian inputs.

Green Radio: How to use novel resource management and cell deployment strategies to minimize the total energy consumption of a cellular network. 

[Industry Experience]

Weisi is experienced in 2G/3G/HSDPA's Terminal & Air Interface.  He was technical accountable (TA) for 2G Automated Validation, 2G European Roaming, and all SIM Card development and integration at T-Mobile International.  He was also Technical Accountable for Nokia & T-Mobile UK's terminal validation relationship.

[Charity Work]

Weisi is extensively active in the philothanthropy field.  In 2010, he ran the Sahara Marathon in Algeria for Saharawi Refugees and in 2008, he ran the London Marathon for St.Johns Ambulance Services.  Furthermore, he is involved in Crisis Commons to assist natural disaster relief through the use of technology, as well as involved a PLAN International project, which tackles child poverty in remote regions of Pakistan.  Weisi is also active with Amnesty International, which raises awareness of exploitation.  In 2007, he setup his own research network to rethink the fundamental challenges to reducing global poverty, and hope to use 21st century methods to make the world a better place for all.


Weisi is also active in sports, having been part of the Tennis, Badminton and Archery teams for University of Cambridge.  He also practices Tae Kwon Do, Kung-Fu and enjoys Mountain Climbing, having solo climbed 2 of the highest sub-continent mountains.

[Sideline Research]

Modelling human behaviour human society on a global level with the aim of finding a sustainable way of reducing poverty on a global and lasting scale.  This is an inter-disciplinary pursuit involving:  Mathematics, Philosophy, Anthropology, Geography and Computer Science.  The requirement is a motivation to make a large and positive impact on the poorer half of humanity, but to do so on a very imaginative and intelligent way.
