Elementary Use of the Unix Teaching Service

Aims


The aims of the course are to introduce the participants, who are not expected to have any previous knowledge of Unix, to the PWF Linux system and to give them enough basic knowledge to equip them to understand further courses and, if needed, to use the PWF Linux system for exercises and dissertation work.


Lectures


The three 2-hour sessions cover various aspects of Unix and Unix utilities. Considerable use is made of live demonstrations.


Objectives


At the end of the course students should

  • be familiar with the use of the system for email communication

  • be familiar with the use of Unix utilities for file-handling and archiving

  • have the ability to understand and write bash scripts

  • have created their own web pages on the system
