Paul W. Jardetzky

October 1992, 101 pages

This technical report is based on a dissertation submitted August 1992 by the author for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to the University of Cambridge, Darwin College.

Abstract

This dissertation concentrates on issues related to the provision of a network based storage facility for digital audio and video data. The goal is to demonstrate that a distributed file service in support of these media may be built without special purpose hardware. The main objective is to identify those parameters that affect file system performance and provide the criteria for making desirable design decisions.
