CS Challenges in Constructing Genome Databases
Henning Hermjakob
EMBL - European Bioinformatics Institute
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is the central European
repository and supplier of biology data services for both the academic
and industrial R&D biosciences communities. Currently the EBI's services
receive around one million requests per day, from approximately 200,000
unique hosts. In the past year usage has doubled, and this acceleration
rate is typical of recent years. EBI maintains and develops more than a
dozen databases, with contents ranging from a few hundred to 50.000.000
entries. We will provide an overview of the computational challenges
faced by the EBI services and outline solution strategies. We will also
provide a more detailed case study of a specific EBI project, and
specify a couple of open problems in the form of student projects
available at the EBI.
