Garnet: A Middleware Architecture for Managing Data Streams Originating in Wireless Sensor Networks

The progressive miniaturisation of intelligent, wireless sensing devices pushes us towards the emergence of large-scale, wireless sensor networks. It is highly desirable to share the data originating from such networks, especially in environments where the data consumer can dynamically control the operation of the sensors to achieve optimum results. As the extent and availability of such networks increase, increasing reliance on controlling middleware infrastructure will be necessary to manage the access mechanisms adopted by disparate application developers. This is especially the case as the needs on one application may interfere or conflict with the needs of other applications. In this talk, I will present an architectural framework, Garnet, which provides a data stream centric abstraction to encourage the manipulation and exploitation of data generated in sensor networks.
