I joined the faculty of Cambridge in April 2007 following a period as
a EPSRC Academic (Roberts) Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London.
Prior to that I was an Intel Research Fellow with the University
of Cambridge Computer Laboratory.
Before the Intel Fellowship, I'd been one of the foundation researchers
of the Marconi Research Laboratory in Cambridge and prior to Marconi I was variously an RA and PhD student at the Computer Laboratory in Cambridge, I originally left Australia at the end of 1995.
Before coming to the UK I was at Monash University in
Melbourne, Australia.
Research
Drawing on a background recognised as being as much
computer-engineering as computer-science I derive the greatest
satisfaction from work that leads to an operational system. I have
long regarded the fields of operating systems and networks as dealing
with the very interface of the software and hardware components and
the point upon which a systems effective and efficient operation will
commonly rest. My unifying research theme is to address the
Scalability, Usability, and Reliability of the Internet, transforming
it from a developmental technology to a reliable, ubiquitous service.
I consider appropriate network instrumentation and suitable hardware
and software interfaces for next-generation networks as fundamental to
this end. I describe below my principal topics of research at this
time: Network monitoring and network characterisation through both
content-based and probabilistic methods.
Okay so I like the
blinkenlights - heroic hardware, big machines, little machines, faster
please, super-hyper-alt-meta-transport, world connectivity, zettabyte data-stores, Petabit speeds, stupidly fast CPUs, I love it.
I join the
Systems Research
Group, but have strong interests in the Computer Architecture Group
also. In fact I hate being pigeon-holed so consider me in all groups
unless advised otherwise.
My publications can be found here.
A small selection of things I do:
- I have a long-running interest in the accurate recreation of
networks and systems for simulation, emulation and modelling,
- I build on methods and tools from Machine-Learning to help
indentify Internet applications and behaviours,
- providing insightful characterization of the Internet.
- I build network monitoring systems and infrastructures, recently I've been contributing to CoMo,
- I've renewed my interest in Computer Architectures, Interconnects
in particular and am actively interested in optical-interconnects: a
terrible catch-all that can mean optical backplanes in communications
switches (System Area Network, 10m), all-optical routers in an Internet
(think Wide Area Network, 10km), short-haul optical switching systems (think
Local Area Network; 100m ) and optical board-interconnects (think
Optical PCI; <1m)
- Answer the question "under what conditions does a photonic network
become more energy-efficient than an electrical network?"
- Then build one.

Students
- If you are a potential PhD student my interests are indicated below. Funding oppourtunities are locked closely to the University timetable (overseas? January deadline, all students ideally for
October start) I would expect PhD students to have interests at least co-incident with my own: and
those favoured with a good mathematics and/or engineering background as well as practical
programming experience will make stronger applicants.
- For undergraduates, I plan to offer a number of projects for the appropriate level
student, here are some older examples of ones I had
in mind. (So, likely to change at a moments notice, no binding offers,
do not fold, spindle, mutilate, etc. etc. etc.)
