Vital Signs is an ongoing project in the Rainbow Group of the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Vital Signs is investigating new paradigms for visual interaction, based on a critique of the use of metaphor in user interfaces. As an alternative to metaphor, we propose that computer user interfaces and other information artefacts should be designed to encourage interaction with abstract sub-devices within the interface.
