Proposal
Most Ethernet hubs around the University have management modules which
talk Simple
Network Management Protocols (SNMP). This allows access at
various levels of privilege to enable configuration and monitoring.
Monitoring is obviously very useful because it allows remote
debugging.
Debugging connections in colleges is a big problem, particularly at
the start of terms. A Java based tool to assist network analysis
would be very useful because it could easily be fired up on any near
by machine.

This is the first time I've proposed this project.
Special resources
You may need permission to access management modules at a particular
college. I can arrange this for students I'm prepared to
supervise.
Possible supervisors
I'm prepared to supervise one good Tripos student.
