Preparing to study Computer Science

If you will be coming to Caius to read Computer Science in October, please read the Computer Laboratory's note about preparing to study Computer Science. You should make a particular effort to read Dewdney's New Turing Omnibus by October. This consists of 66 essays that previously appeared in Scientific American and would make a gentle introduction to academic Computer Science. We will be looking at some of the exercises from this book at the beginning of term in October, so please give them some thought.

In particular, we will be using the exercises from Chapters 3, 13, 20 & 38 for our first supervision on Digital Electronics and the exercises from Chapters 1, 11 & 35 for Foundations of Computer Science.

You should also try all the exercises in the workbook from the University's Faculty of Mathematics. You will also need to hone your mathematical skills, so please also work your way through the exercises in Körner's Pleasures of Counting.
