Towards a Reputation System for the Internet

As the Internet becomes an increasingly complex web of applications
and data, a major challenge will be in reducing the required
management intervention from both users and network administrators.
One of the recurring management decisions we would like to automate is
when one system has to decide how to interact with another system.
Should it trust the other system? If it is charging for the
interaction, how much should it charge?
We believe that predefining which systems and what interactions are
allowed will be too rigid for some systems and their possible
interactions. Instead the decision should be based on the past
history of the systems with each other and other systems. To
this end we are designing and building a reputation system, where the
history of past interactions is used to provide measures of the
reputation of entities.
In this talk, I will discuss the challenges in building such a
reputation system, and our progress to date.
