What is it?
Some software
- grandly entitled 'The University of Cambridge Web Authentication System' (ucam-webauth)
A centrally-managed authentication server
- which is what 'Raven' really is
What does it give you?
- an authenticated identity for a web browser user
Why authentication, why ANOTHER system?
Notes:
Ucam-Webauth is home-grown, though similar to solutions in use elsewhere, including
* CAS from Yale (http://www.yale.edu/tp/auth/)
* Pubcookie from the University of Washington (http://www.pubcookie.org/); and
* Webauth V3 from Stanford (http://webauthv3.stanford.edu/)
'The Raven server' is actually a mutually-redundant pair of servers with mirrored disks and redundant power supplies.
