"Let's go play in the labyrinth" cried Peter, throwing caution to the wind. Lucy managed to catch the poor cat (for caution was its name), and meekly followed Susan and Edmund out of the big old classical portico into the giant maze that filled the whole front garden. "Look out for any escaped bulls", Professor King shouted after them, with a sly grin. "And mind you keep note of the way back - you can use the old lampost and broken down taxi as landmarks" added his wife. It was far too late as the cavelcade had moved beyond earshot, and were now thoroughly lost in the maze. "I'm sure it wasn;t this cold when we left the palazzo" mused susan, pulling together some makeshift cloaks for all of them made from myrtle tree branches drawn from the tunnel walls. "What can that be, ahead of us?" she asked. "Let's go see" exclaimed Edmund, excitedly. "It looks like a Tulgy Wood, with snowtrails and mysterious riverways and lions and tigers and bears", he continued - he certainly was widely read. As they wended their way into the wild wood, susan suddenly said "Where's lucy?". "That dratted girl and her darn cat", cursed Peter. "I'll go back and look for her" offered Eustace, who suddenly appeared from behind a lampost, unexectedly. "Thank you" replied Peter, condescendingly, and turned to lead the others on. As they prceeded they became aware of the sound of tinkling water, and, rounding a sharp corner between two giant sycamore trees, they were confronted with the amazing sight of a huge dam, across a largely frozen river. The tinkling appeard to come from someone, or rather, some thing that was cutting a whole in the ice and tapping its piple, whilst lowering a fishing line into the dark water beneath. This was Mr Tsigariasto, the first native that the children were to meet in this new land. "You'll be looking for the lord Kleftiko, no doubt" the Beaverage observed. "Who is he or it?", asked the wide eyed Edmund, astonished at a speaking animal, despite being one. "Oh, he's lionized all around here" was all the response he would get. Meanwhile, further back int he dark, Lucy and Caution had been found not just by Eustace, but also by a Mr Stifado, who was clearly a dear, and had bought them to his small oven warm abode and was making them some chamomile tea, with only the smallest shot of raki, for puddleglum, his friend, was very happy to stand in as mixologist for the party.
