Who or what are RFCs?

RFCs are Request For Comments. This is a series of documents about the Internet and its protocols, maintained by the RFC editor, who is appointed by the Internet Advisory Board, who are selected/voted for by the Internet Society. [Ref The Internet Society].

Some RFCs specify Internet standards, developed (usually) by the IABs Internet Engineering Task Force, and ratified by the Internet Engineering Steering Group of the IAB. These are listed in the list of standards RFC.
