Existing systems

The need for process migration was identified in the late 1970's by Solomon and Finkel [#SolomonTRDOS##1#] but only relatively few successful implementations have been reported. Amongst them are the Eden system [#LazowskaTAOTE##1#], its successor the Emerald system [#JulFGMIT##1#], Accent [#RashidAACON##1#], Demos/MP [#PowellPMIDM##1#], LOCUS [#WalkerTLDOS##1#], the V-system [#TheimerPREFF##1#], Charlotte [#ArtsyDAPMF##1#], Sprite [#DouglisPMITS##1#,#DouglisTPMDA##1#], SPICE [#ZayasATPMB##1#], and Chorus/COOL [#HabertCKSFO##1#]. A selection of these mechanisms will be examined in more detail in section #existnonu#2530>. Various attempts have been made to migrate UNIX processes. These deserve some attention and will be addressed in more detail in section #umig#2531>, largely because they demonstrate the difficulties inherent in such an approach.
