Failure is an option

Abstract

We'd like to construct an optimal digital infrastructure that consumes energy as efficiently as possible. This talk focusses on the power consumption of redundant support infrastucture in our datacentres. Instead of provisioning in an attempt to eliminate all failures we instead would like to provision so that failures produce a smooth decline in capacity. If a failure occurs the datacentre should alter the deployment of services to maximise the service level in light of the available capacity. We see the current formulation of Service Level Agreements to be a big obstacle and are interested in alternative structures which provide incentives for provisioning which is appropriate for a client's business needs.
