Edge-based Image Segmentation

Below is a picture of Stonehenge followed by various edge-based segmentations of the picture.

Edge map

Saliency filtering for the edge map

In general long locally straight edges are more salient to an image description the short randomly turning edges. Here longer edges have been selected and breaks in topology caused by the non maximum suppression routine corrected by regrowing edges.

From edges to regions

Here edges have been taken to be a subset of the set of region boundaries. A Voronoi image has been produced (the darkness of the image is proportional to the distance from a pixel to the nearest edge).

The watershed regions of the Voronoi image gives a set of regions, shown here with their mean colour.
