I have been passed responsibility for NTP on JIPS, and am in the process of
composing some documents: one for internal discussion within the IPTAG (policy
bits & pieces) and another as a plea for information to build a suitable
"database".

[Currently (94/09/15) I know of 3379 UK hosts (3222 in ac.uk),
70 AC Institutions, 132 Departments with
 Stratums: 4*S1, 269*S2, 1345*S3, 801*S4, 316*S5
by auto probing, and have had replies from 50 institutions. ]

I would very much appreciate any such info, along the lines of:

	Host:
	Location:
	Synchronization:
	Service area:
	Access policy:
	Contact:
	Internal:
	External:
	Also:
	Note:

E.g.

Host: ntp[0-2].dcs.ed.ac.uk
Location:	Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Edinburgh (000900E/521300N)
Synchronization: NTP V3 secondary (stratum 2) ?Sun?/Unix
Service area:	ed, JIPS
Access policy: generally open access, but email contact below first
Contact:	George Ross <timelord@dcs.ed.ac.uk>
Internal:	ntp2.cam.ac.uk
External:	bear.zoo.bt.co.uk(GPS), iis-gw.ethz.ch(DCF)
Note: Our stratum-2 machine server may be moved to a different machine
some time in the next couple of months.
Also: *.dcs.ed.ac.uk

[ The idea is to have a central "backbone", with each institution having a
server (or two) which connects to a couple of "backbone" servers, and a
"couple" of other institutions. That server (or servers) is used by
departments (or whatever) which then broadcast (or whatever).
The database will be useful for Institutions wanting to create the
  cross links.
]

[ Maybe this will help:

Host: list of 2-4 "low stratum" offical clocks, preferably ntp[0-3].inst.ac.uk
Location: Organisation name (long/lat)
Synchronization: NTP V<n> ("normal" stratum), hw/OS
Service area: ...
Access policy: Better nbot just to say "free" -- at least ask to be mailed
Contact: Where to send info & requests, preferably "timelord@inst.ac.uk"
Internal:	JIPS clocks peered with (with source if S1)
External: Non JIPS clocks peered with (with source)
Also: other machines covered, e.g. *.site.ac.uk
Note: anything that might be relevant
