I'd like to ask each of you to serve on the search committee for the
temp faculty member we are trying to line up for this fall and
spring semesters.

Here is a draft of a position description we need.  I'd like your comments.
I would like to emphasize teaching during the evaluation process since
that is what we will be having this person do.  I also left things open
enough so that we could hire an MS or PhD person.

VACANCY  ANNOUNCEMENT
University of Idaho
Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Idaho invites
applications for a visiting assistant professor faculty position.
The position is for the 1995-96 academic year only.  Candidates should
have a specialization involving the Theory of Programming Languages,
but candidates in other areas of computer science will also be considered.

Qualifications for this position include a PhD or MS in Computer Science
or a closely related field, US citizenship or lawfully authorized alien
worker status, and teaching experience.  Successful candidates are expected
to perform undergraduate and graduate teaching.

The department has 13 tenure-track faculty and 1 jointly appointed faculty
(including 3 women faculty), approximately 200 undergraduate majors, and
30 graduate students.  The BS, MS, and PhD degrees in computer science are
currently offered.  The department has established research laboratories
for software engineering and formal methods and the department is
associated with the NASA Microelectronics Research Center and the DOT
National Center for Advanced Transportation Technology at the University
of Idaho.  Washington State University is located just 8 miles away and
cooperative programs are available with their faculty.  The University
of Idaho is situated in the northern panhandle of Idaho (about 90 miles
south of Spokane, WA), close to spectacular lakes, wilderness, and skiing.

The Computer Science department has approximately 50 HP Unix workstations
which are connected to the Internet. Numerous other college and university
workstations and computer laboratories are available for faculty and
student use.  Over the past few years, Hewlett-Packard has donated
$1,000,000 in computer equipment to the Department of Computer Science to
further enhance the research and teaching capability of the faculty.
