I'll be happy to install gzip for anyone who lacks the time.  The
advantages of gzip (controversy-free algorithm and increased
performance) far outweigh the 5 minute hassle of building the
executable.

Unless you have a unix box from Mars, installing gzip boils down to
two commands ('configure' and 'make install').
