Subject: Advert - Position at Glasgow.

		Chair in Computing Science
		  University of Glasgow

We seek a new Professor to develop and lead a new research group in
our Computing Science Department. We particularly seek applicants
with expertise in:

		Large scale distributed systems
			Multimedia

Strong applications in other areas of computing science are also
welcome. The Department has a very strong research base, and was
awarded the top grade of 5 in the 1992 UK Research Assessment
Exercise. We have four existing world-class research groups, in
databases, functional programing, information retrieval, and
interactive systems. These groups are complemented by other excellent
research carried out by individuals or small groups.

Our goal is that the new Professor should become the focus of a fifth
world-class research group, so experience as a research leader is
highly desirable. We are particularly interested in those with a
successful track record in building and studying large-scale systems;
such experience will be considered on a par with publications.

The Department is a thriving, vigorous and friendly place. There are
around 33 academic staff, including five professors, supported by
excellent secretarial, technical, and programming staff, as well as
state-of-the-art computer systems. We teach over 1000 students (400
FTEs). Our course structure is in a phase of rapid development: we
plan new courses at both undergraduate and advanced MSc level. The
new Professor would be expected to contribute to the teaching and
administration of the department.

This Chair is a new post, representing an investment by the University
in our department. We are seeking industrial sponsorship to match the
University's investment. This sponsorship will fund a lectureship to
accompany the new chair. We hope that the new Professor will be in
post by October 1994.

Glasgow is an exciting city to live in. It is large and cosmopolitan,
with spectacular Victorian architecture alongside modern developments,
and it is a major centre for the arts, conferences and exhibitions.
The Highlands are within easy reach.
