Subject: Re: CALL FOR VOTES

I would REALLY like to go to a HOL meeting in Malta but I will be voting for HOL-93 to
be in UBC because I believe that it is strategically important for our community to formally
adopt the practice of alternating between either side of the Atlantic for the annual shindig.
A poll such as this will inevitably reflect the locations of voters but it would be most
unfortunate if year after year a slight preponderance of voters in Europe ensured that the
event was weakened by the North Americans staging a similar workshop. In spite of Jeff's
loyal protestations someone is bound to organise something that would cater to the grad
students in USA and Canada.

This contribution is firstly to give a view from someone outside Europe and North America.
Secondly, I would hope that someone in Europe will speak out in support of a mechanism that
has alternation as a default. Thirdly, I wish to promulgate some research on the history
of Worshop sites, noting that up to 1993 four will have been in Europe and one in NA. Davis
and Leuven were not successful at first proposal; Vancouver has been trying for a while;
my hope is that history will repeat itself and we can meet in Vancouver in 1993 and Msida
in 1994.

         *-------------------------------------------*

We are beginning to think about when and where the Second International
HOL Users' Meeting should be. Possibilities include:

   Cambridge England
   West Coast USA
   East Coast USA
   Canada

Are there any other suggestions? (Hawaii?)

Mike asked me to post this message to the list. There seems to be some
kind of problem posting. I'm working on it and hope to have it cleared up
in the next little while.

                 SECOND INTERNATIONAL HOL USERS MEETING

                      Preliminary Announcement

The result of the questionaire about the HOL users meeting (sent to info-hol
a couple months ago) was that West Coast USA and Cambridge UK were equally
popular venues. The most popular month was September, with December a close
second (one less vote). There was no time that suited everyone.

After discussing the topic with various people, it has been decided to hold
the meeting in December in Cambridge. By this time the new manual and
tutorials will be finished.

Its time to cast your vote for the location of the 1990 HOL User's Group
Meeting. There are three proposed locations (in seemingly random order
;-):

1.) Aarhaus University, Demark
2.) University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
3.) University of California, Davis

Hi Everyone,

Sorry this took so long, but I've been doing a bit of traveling. As I
said, I cut off voting on the 9th of April and tallied the votes this
morning.

(drum roll please)

The winner was Aarhaus.

I will leave it up to the folks at Aarhaus to decide on a time and go into
particulars. Not very many people expressed a preference on dates with
their votes and I suspect that the place may make a difference.

The result of the recent vote for the 1991 venue is that DAVIS was the
preferred site. Forty-five votes were received in all.

Therefore, the meeting will be held at the University of California at
Davis. As there was a significant number of votes for each of the two
sites, we are planning provisionally that the 1992 meeting be held at
IMEC in Leuven, Belgium.

The dates suggested by the Davis team are 4 - 6 September 1991.

Thanks to everyone who voted! - Avra Cohn
