Venue: University of Malta, Msida, Malta G.C.
-----

Organizers: Juanito Camilleri, and other members of the Department
---------- of Mathematics and Computing Science, University of Malta.

Flights: There are several flights from London, Rome, Frankfurt,
------- Paris, Copenhagen and other European airports every day.
A return flight London/Malta/London costs between 90 and
                180 pounds sterling. London/Malta is a 3 hour flight,
Paris/Malta is a two and a half hour flight, Rome/Malta
is a 1 hour flight. For those who wish to inter-rail down,
there are daily hover-craft trips from Siracuse to Malta.
This trip takes 1 hour and costs about 30 pounds sterling
                (return).

Accommodation: Malta can offer a wide range of facilities to suit your
------------- tastes and pocket. Weather you want accommodation by the
sea or in town, we can arrange it. For $50 a night one
can get a very nice room (bed & breakfast) in a four star
hotel. Of course we can arrange for good accommodation for
                less than that!!

Studentships: We have made preliminary enquires with AirMalta about
------------ student travel discounts. If this proposal is accepted
we will strive to negotiate substantial discounts on
flights for students. We will also seek sponsorship from
various local companies and the Maltese Ministry of
Education to assist students with their travel.

Special Events: We can offer the usual attractions of the sun and the sea.
-------------- A night boat trip around the Maltese Islands, with a
Bar-B-Que on-board or on the beach. Water sports ranging
from scuba-diving to windsurfing can also be on the agenda.
Of course the are no end of museums and places of interest
that can be visited if one chooses to take a relaxed approach.
For those who like the shade we can always find them a good
bottle of wine to keep them company.

About Malta:
-----------

Anyone who bothers to look for Malta on a map will find a spec in the centre
of the mediterranean --- an island inhabited as far back as 4000 B.C., a
cross road between civilizations, a witness to survival against odds.

Because of its excellent strategic position, the island has a history of
occupation ranging from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans,
Arabs, Normans, the Knights of St.John, the French under Napoleon, and
the British who granted Malta independence in 1964 after nearly 200 years
of government. Maltese landscape and towns reflect the island's history.
Valletta, our capital city, is a living monument to Grand Master De la
Vallette, the master of the Order of the Knights of St.John who defended
the island against Ottoman invasion in 1565. Mdina our old "silent" city
is a museum in its own right, with excellent examples of Norman architecture.
Moreover, the island has several neolithic temples dating as far back as
4000 B.C. --- Mnidra, Ggantia, Hagar Qim and the Hypogeum to mention but a
few.

From the turbulent and exciting past, Malta is looking into the future. The
island attracts thousands of tourists each year. Apart from the tourist
industry, Malta is updating and expanding its infrastructure and tele-
communications to support offshore banking, oil exploration and ship building.
Malta is an associate member of the EEC and expects full membership within 5
years. The University of Malta aims to foster links and collaborative projects
with other European, Mediterranean and North American institutions. In this
spirit we hope to be your host for HUG 1993. If you choose our hospitality, we
will send a mail shot with a questionnaire designed to help us get a clear
impression of what people expect from the meeting. Be it a full blown
conference with refereed papers and proceedings, or be it an informal meeting
and platform for discussion, we feel we can accommodate your requests.

If we follow tradition and organise HUG93 in late August or September, you can
expect warm weather, good food and a touch of "la dolce vita". The choice is
yours --- how about a warm mediterranean HUG?!!

Proposal to Host the 1993 HOL User's Group Meeting
==================================================

Venue: University of British Columbia (UBC) Campus,
                Vancouver, Canada

Organizers: Jeff Joyce, Carl Seger and other members of the
Integrated Systems Design Group, Department of
Computer Science, University of British Columbia.

Airport: Vancouver International Airport is 20 minutes (by car)
from the UBC campus with direct flights from Europe, Asia
and many US cities. The nearest US city, Seattle, is
about three hours away (by car).

Accommodation: Self-catering suites for 1-3 persons at approximately
$50 per room per night in conference center hotel
(on campus) ... 15 minutes walk from the beach !

Dates: August or September of 1993.

Studentships: If this proposal is accepted, we would seek funding
for student travel bursaries. Our goal would be
to partially cover the travel expenses of 10-15
students (between $500 and $1500 per student).

Format: We propose a 5-day workshop with the following format:

Monday and Tuesday: A two day introductory course on
the HOL system including some laboratory exercises.

Wednesday: A one day tutorial overview of the HOL system
with emphasis on the applications of the HOL system in
the specification and verification of mixed hardware
                  software systems.

Thursday and Friday: A two day symposium devoted to
presentation and discussion of recent research
directly related to the HOL system.

There would be separate registrations for each of the
three above components of the workshop. (We anticipate
that some participants will only want to attend the
last part of this 5-day workshop.)

Special Events: We propose two special events to follow the 5-day
                workshop:

"Sailing Expedition" - On the Saturday following the workshop
we propose to organize a half or full day tour of English Bay
in a skippered sailing boat ... or possibly a longer trip
out to the Gulf Islands. (Our multi-talented research
group includes a qualified skipper !)

"Hardware Verification Course" - In the week following
the workshop, we (tentatively) propose to organize a 3-day
course on "Formal Hardware Verification" (which would also
be held on the UBC campus). This course would cover the
three main approaches to formal hardware verification,
namely, symbolic simulation, state machine analysis,
and theorem-proving. The course would include laboratory
                access to supporting software tools.

Local Interest: The UBC Campus features outstanding outdoor recreational
opportunities: sandy ocean beaches (15 minutes walk from
thecampus); botanical gardens on campus; walking trails
in an adjacent forest of towering cedars and Douglas firs.
Across town, there are hiking trails on the mountains
overlooking the city of Vancouver. Nearby, in the Gulf
Islands (1-2 hours away by ferry boat), there are many
opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities such
as bike touring, sailing, salmon fishing and wildlife
                watching (including whale watching).

Hi Luc,
I have still not been able to get the required information for organizing
the HOL user's meeting from my colleagues, i.e. as far as the sight
seeing trips are concerned. As opposed to Malta and Vancouver, Karlsruhe
as such does not have anything directly interesting to offer. Although one
could make a trip to Alsace or the Black Forest. Furthermore, we are out on
a seminar for one whole week and will be back on 16th March and it
is now too late. I shall offer the possiblity of organizing the next year.

Best Wishes,
Kumar

Proposal to Host the 1993 HOL User's Group Meeting
--------------------------------------------------

Location
--------

The Coeur D'Alene Resort and Conference Center, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho

Organizers
----------

Phil Windley, Jim Alves-Foss and other members of the Laboratory for
Applied Logic, Department of Computer Science, University of Idaho.

Transportation
--------------

The Coeur D'Alene Resort Conference center is an easy 30 miles East of
Spokane, Washington on US Interstate 195 (80 miles north of the University
of Idaho on US Highway 95). Spokane International Airport servers several
major carriers with easy connections to all major international airports.
The resort provides transportation from Spokane airport for a modest fee.

Lodging
-------

The Coeur D'Alene Resort hotel has rooms available for conference
participants. Numerous motels and bed and breakfasts are also located
throughout the resort town of Coeur D'Alene.

Support
-------

As was done for the 1992 meeting, we will seek sponsorship from
organizations such as IEEE and ACM. We will also seek financial assistance
for students with travel stipends of at least $500 per student for travel
expenses.

Schedule
--------

The workshop will be held in Summer of 1993. We propose a 1-day tutorial
and 3-day workshop similar to the format for HOL 91 in Davis.

Local Highlights
----------------

Come to Idaho for the workshop and stay for a vacation!

The Coeur D'Alene Resort is a world class resort located on Lake Coeur
D'Alene in Northern Idaho. In 1990, The Coeur D'Alene Resort was ranked
the number one resort location in the world by readers of The Conde' Nast
TRAVLER magazine. The resort offers three lounges, an indoor recreation
center, golf course (with the world's only floating green), an on--site
marina, horseback riding, tennis, seaplane rides, parimutual greyhound
racing, fishing charters, boat rentals, hiking, and parasailing.

Idaho is home to the largest wilderness area in the continental US and
numerous opportunities exist for hiking, camping, and fishing. The
University of Idaho Outdoor Recreation Center rents camping and other
outdoor equipment for a reasonable charge.

If there is enough interest we will set up a white water rafting expedition
on the Salmon River through the auspices of the University of Idaho Outdoor
Recreation Program. Sturgeon and steelhead fishing expeditions on the
Snake River can also be arranged (a sturgeon is an ocean going fish that
reach lengths of 10 feet and weighs several hundred pounds; a steelhead is
an ocean going trout that *only* weighs 50 pounds).
