Subject: HOL90: call for votes
Date: Fri, 16 Mar 90 13:38:31 -0800
From: Phil Windley <windley@cheetah>

Its time to cast your vote for the location of the 1990 HOL User's Group
Meeting. There are three proposed locations (in seemingly random order
;-):

1.) Aarhaus University, Demark

2.) University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

3.) University of California, Davis

I put such advertising as I received at the end of this message. Aarhaus
didn't send me anything, but they can post something here if they want.

Here's how you vote:

Send mail to me (windley@iris.ucdavis.edu) listing all three sites in your
order of preference. Please also indicate prefered dates if you have any.
Also indicate places you just cannot go. (For example you could attend if
held in Aarhaus, but not in North America.) I'll try to take this all into
consideration, but I don't have an algorithm in mind.

*THIS IS IMPORTANT*

Please put the keyword "HOL90" in your subject line (that way your vote can
be routed by my mailer to the appropriate mail box and not clog up my
personal mail box.

*END OF IMPORTANT PART*

Thanks,

Proposals to Host the 1990 HOL User's Group Meeting
==================================================

UBC
---

Venue: UBC (University of British Columbia) Campus,
                Vancouver, Canada

Organizer: Jeff Joyce, Computer Science Department, UBC
                (formerly, Computer Laboratory, Cambridge University).

Airport: Vancouver International Airport is 20 minutes (by car)
from the UBC campus. Direct flights from UK and Europe.

Accommodation: Self-catering suites for 1-3 persons at $45(CAN) per
room per night in conference center hotel (on campus).
10 minutes walk from the beach !

Meals: A variety of places to eat on campus and surrounding
area. There are facilities for a conference dinner.

Dates: Anytime (subject to availability)
(best time would be late summer, early fall, eg. Sept 5-7).

Administration: UBC CICSR (Centre for Integrated Computer Systems
Research) has tentatively agreed to sponsor this meeting
                by providing administrative support.

Studentships: UBC CISCR has also tentatively agreed to offer one or more
studentships covering travelling expenses, accommodation and
registration fee to be awarded on the basis of innovative
                HOL-related research by students.

Local Interest: Outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities: sandy
beaches (10 minutes away walking time); botanical gardens
                on campus;  walking trails in a forest adjacent to campus;
                skiing (in Dec !) on a mountain overlooking Vancouver;
nearby gulf islands; whale-watching on Vancouver Island
                (overnight trip).

Various possibilities to visit local microelectronics
industries. The Boeing (aircraft) plant is easily reached in
several hours (by car) where you can go for a tour.

UC Davis
--------

Venue: UC Davis Campus, Davis, CA

Organizer: Phil Windley, Computer Science Department, UC Davis

Airport: Sacramento Airport is 20 minutes (by car) from the UC Davis
campus. Best approach (from Europe) is a direct flight to
LA and then a quick hop to Sacramento. There is a shuttle
service from the airport and Davis is small enough tthat
you don't need a car to get around town (bikes are also
available for rent; everyone bikes in Davis).

Accommodation: Several motels are within easy walking distance of the
                campus ($38/night).

Meals: The downtown Davis area is next to campus and provides a
variety of good restraunts. We have facilities for a
                conference dinner.

Dates: Anytime is OK. September, October, and November are very
                nice. December is sometimes rainy.

Local Interest: The San Francisco Bay area is about an hour away (by car).
Reno (read: gambling) and Lake Tahoe are easily reached is
a few hours (similarly by car). Davis has an old tractor
museum for the farmers in the crowd and miles and miles of
open fields. (Hey! We like it here anyway!) Karl might
even let us use his pool.
