Phil,

In reply to your request for proposals to host the 1990 HOL users group
meeting, here's what we could do at UBC:

Proposal to Host the 1990 HOL User's Group Meeting

Venue:          UBC (University of British Columbia) Campus,
                Vancouver, Canada

Organizer:      Jeff Joyce, Computer Science Department, UBC
                (formerly, Computer Laboratory, Cambridge University).

Airport:        Vancouver International Airport is 20 minutes (by car)
                from the UBC campus.  Direct flights from UK and Europe.

Accommodation:  Self-catering suites for 1-3 persons at $45(CAN) per
                room per night in conference center hotel (on campus).
                10 minutes walk from the beach !

Meals:          A variety of places to eat on campus and surrounding
                area.  There are facilities for a conference dinner.

Dates:          Anytime (subject to availability)
                (best time would be late summer, early fall, eg. Sept 5-7).

Administration: UBC CICSR (Centre for Integrated Computer Systems
                Research) has tentatively agreed to sponsor this meeting
                by providing administrative support.

Studentships:   UBC CISCR has also tentatively agreed to offer one or more
                studentships covering travelling expenses, accommodation and
                registration fee to be awarded on the basis of innovative
                HOL-related research by students.

Local Interest: Outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities:  sandy
                beaches (10 minutes away walking time); botanical gardens
                on campus;  walking trails in a forest adjacent to campus;
                skiing (in Dec !) on a mountain overlooking Vancouver;
                nearby gulf islands; whale-watching on Vancouver Island
                (overnight trip).

                Various possibilities to visit local microelectronics
                industries.  The Boeing (aircraft) plant is easily reached in
                several hours (by car) where you can go for a tour.
