                           HOL for Common Lisp
                           ===================

The next release of of HOL (HOL88.1.10) is compatible with both Franz Lisp and
Common Lisp. The work to achieve this was jointly paid for by Hewlett-Packard
Laboratories (Bristol) and SRI International (Cambridge). HOL has been tested
(and works) on the following systems:

        Franz Lisp Opus 38.69
        Sun Common Lisp (Lucid) 2.1.1
        Kyoto Common Lisp June 3, 1987
        Austin Kyoto Common Lisp 1.179
        Procyon Common Lisp 2.1.3

HOL has also been tested on Allegro Common Lisp 3.0.3, but a bug in the
Allegro Lisp interpreter means HOL doesn't work. Franz Inc have been told
about the bug and say they will fix it soon.

Procyon Common Lisp is for the Apple Mackintosh and under it HOL performs
surprisingly well (half to two-thirds the speed of Franz-HOL on a SUN3). An 8M
Mac could be used for serious work as well as making a slick and "luggable"
demo platform.

It is hoped to start distributing HOL88.1.10 in a few weeks time.
