Introduction to ECAD

No. of lectures + practicals: 4 + 7  

These four lectures are prerequisite for the practical classes in ECAD and architecture which will be run in Cockcroft 4 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout the Michaelmas Term.

Structure of afternoon classes.
Part IB assessed exercise requirements. The design tools and design flow we shall use. Get you started exercise.

Logic simulation.
Using the CSIM simulator: high and low level simulation. Stimulus generation: clock and pulse generator models. Flip-flop modelling and system maximum speed.

The Verilog language.
Structural and register transfer constructs in Verilog. Combinatorial operators, simple signal and bus forms. The CSYN Verilog compiler and examples. Combining synthesised, structural and behavioural sections.

Practical work.
Xilinx devices and teaching board facilities. Examples.
