LocationEmmanuel College is situated in the centre of Cambridge. Click here to see the location of the College on the University map. On your arrivalYou should enter the College through the main (front) entrance on St Andrew's Street (circled in red on the map). Immediately inside the entrance is the Porter's Lodge (on the right) where you can sign in and get your room key. The Porter's Lodge is manned 24 hours a day. Registration will take place on Monday from 1830-1900 under the cloisters in Front Court, next to the main entrance. On Tuesday, registration will open at 0900 in the Harrod's Room in the Queen's Building. The registration desk will also be open during coffee and tea breaks. All conference presentations take place in the Queen's Building Lecture Theatre, in Emmanuel College. There is a plan of the College just inside the main entrance to show you the location of the Queen's Building. Most meals take place in the main Hall in Emmanuel College, which is on your left as you enter the College. Bus and train stationsEmmanuel College is situtated fifty metres from the main bus station (Drummer Street) and about 1km from the railway station. There is a frequent (every 10 minutes) bus from the railway station into the centre of town which stops at the main bus station. Bus servicesAll national bus services currently stop at the main bus station (Drummer Street). From here you can walk to the front of the College (about fifty metres).Train servicesThe Cambridge station is located one kilometre south of the city centre. From here you will need to take either a taxi or a bus (runs every ten minutes and stops at the main bus station). There is a frequent train service between Cambridge and London to either King's Cross Station or Liverpool Street Station. The trip takes about one hour. Trains leave roughly every half hour during the day. However, there is a five or six hour gap between about midnight and about 6 a.m. when no trains run between the two cities. Air travelOf the three main London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted), Stansted is by far the closest to Cambridge. Travel from any of these airports to Cambridge can be achieved by bus or train. StanstedStansted is the nearest London airport to Cambridge, by a long way. Enquire about buses or trains at the airport.Currently there is an hourly direct train service to Cambridge during the day. It costs about £7.00 (one way) and the journey time is about half an hour. There are frequent trains from Stansted to London during the day. You can take a London train and change at Bishops Stortford for a train heading to Cambridge, although this will generally make your trip significantly longer than taking the direct train. There are no trains between midnight and 6 a.m. There is more than one bus service. Try the National Express timetables. If you rent a car take the M11 North. It is recommended that you do not rent a car as there is limited car parking at the workshop venue. HeathrowThere is an hourly bus to Cambridge which leaves from stops at both Heathrow Central Bus Station and Terminal 4. Enquire at the airport for stops and bus times, or check the coach company's web page. The buses are often late. The journey is a little over two hours and you arrive at Drummer Street Bus Station which is 50 metres from the main entrance to the workshop venue. Alternatively you can get from Heathrow to Cambridge by train. Either (1) take the Underground (Piccadilly Line) to King's Cross Station (about 45 minutes) or (2) take the Heathrow Express to Paddington (15 minutes) and then the Underground (Circle Line or Hammersmith & City Line) to King's Cross (another 15 minutes). From King's Cross get a train to Cambridge (see above).GatwickThe Heathrow bus also services Gatwick. From Gatwick it takes over three hours to get to Cambridge. There are also train services: the easiest (and cheapest) way is to use the Thameslink service and change at King's Cross (about 300 metres' walk from King's Cross Thameslink station to King's Cross main line station): turn left out of the Thameslink station and keep going; it is well signposted. Gatwick to King's Cross takes about 40 minutes, trains are frequent. Alternatively take the train to London Victoria and the Underground (Victoria Line) to King's Cross Station, and then get a train to Cambridge (see above). Car ParkingThere is very limited car parking at the workshop venue. It is suggested that delegates use public transport rather than a car if at all possible. |
