Here are a number of student projects I would = be interested in supervising. (Before working for Microsoft Research, I worked at=20 the CL and then at the Engineering Department.)

Title: Academic paper organiser:

The aim of the project is to develop a personal version of citeseer (http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/cs)= . Increasingly researchers are maintaining personal databases of academic papers,=20 and an ad-hoc approach to organise these them.

The aim of the project is to develop a system that can=20 support a user in manage postscript and pdf copies of papers. The project has=20 several stages:

• A simple system would be developed which allows the=20 user to create a record for each paper in the database, storing title, authors, abstract and other such information.
• This would be extended to attempt to automatically=20 obtain information about the papers. Two approaches could be used:
  • Obtain the information from the citeseer web site=20 (easy) (or other web sites)
  • Analyse the source file to extract the information=20 (hard)
• The references from each paper would be extracted=20 (either using citeseer or from the source file), and allow cross referencing=20 with other papers in the database
• The automatic downloading of papers from citeseer/Internet=20 to the local database, in the background at the request of the user.
   

The aim of the project would be to make the organiser=20 available publicly - in the hope that people would find it useful. The project=20 would require access to a PC, and would be ideally written in C# (not fixed).
