Latest update: a few corrections due to changes in reality; tasteful picture of myself added.
About me
I'm a PhD student at King's
College, working under the supervision of Steve Hand in the Systems
Research Group. I graduated with a BA in Computer Science, again from
King's College, in 2003. I subsequently worked as an intern at Intel
Research Cambridge for 12 months.
Research
I spent an enjoyable 1 year internship at Intel Research
Cambridge. Intel are funding my PhD and I retain research links
with them (I also use their free coffee machine a lot). I have a slightly out
of date Intel homepage.
My projects
I have been working on the Xen project for a long time now and now
have code at all layers of the software stack. My research interests
are closely aligned with the Xen project, which I continue to
contribute to. Here are some projects that I have built or
contributed to:
Nightly updated snapshots of my hg repositories are available at My Xenbits pages.
For an overwiew of my work during the past 10 months, read my 1st
Year Report.
My PhD Topic
I am investigating tighter integration amongst virtual machines on the
same host. I hope to improve aggregate performance by improving
sharing and statistical multiplexing, relative to current strict
partitioning techniques. See my thesis
proposal for more details.
For a talk on this work, see the presentation I gave at the filesystems retreat at Cambridge:
Supervisions
This year, I'm supervising Part 1B Computer Design and Part 1A
Operating Systems. Students may also want to check out my
supervisions page.
Techie stuff
Uni
I figure that in a university you'd expect to find unicycles. These
days I have 4 of them: a 20" street uni, a 29" road uni for longer
distances, a 36" wheel for going really fast and 20"
BC wheel for being crazy with.
Long trips
Cuppers cycling
We raced in the 2006 Cuppers time trial, against a load of carbon
fibre racing bikes. Having everybody else in the race overtake us,
and having cars / buses thundering past at 60mph did not put us off
(too much).
Trip to Ely: attempt 1
Pictures here
We attempted to ride to Ely along the riverside paths. Out to
Waterbeach things weren't too bad. Beyond there it got a bit hairy...
The paths were offroad and difficult to pass on a road uni. With a
certain amount of insane dedication we covered about 16 miles,
although some of it was walked (I walked much more, due to fatigue,
lack of fitness, injury and having a uni which is difficult to mount
on a narrow lumpy pathway with drops either side ;-))
The 29" wheel worked well on the flatter portions, making it
possible to go substantially faster than the 20" allowed. Our plan is
to obtain proper Muni equipment and try the trip again - Cambridge to
Ely should certainly be possible this summer!
