It's 1997. Don Rosa, the author of The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck, has been telling us beautiful Duck stories for exactly ten years. We are happy to present his many fans with a full length book on this new star in the Disney comics firmament. There wasn't one; you wanted it; we did too. We all did. So we set out to wrote the book that we ourselves, as comic fans, would have liked to buy. We went to see Don and asked him as many questions as we possibly could, exploring his life and times, his little-known pre-Disney activity, his love for Unca Carl's ducks. We probed into the untold emotions behind his first $crooge story. We took loads of photographs. We browsed with him through stacks of old business ledgers full of the stories he drew when he was a kid. And we interviewed him, no less than four times: with a tape recorder, with an intercontinental live computer chat and, of course, with e-mail. Then we commented on his work and wrote several essays, analysing it in detail; both on its own merits and in the wider contexts of Disney's other production and of the comics panorama in general, tracing back his influences and roots to authors that some may now have even forgotten. We strived to provide a guided tour of the Don Rosa phenomenon that will give the joy of discovery even to the most dedicated of fans, while offering the newcomer highlights of the narrative landscapes he shouldn't miss. We looked carefully at the network of family relationships that Don reconstructed for his Family Tree, and we followed the trails of all the characters he mentions - and of loads more that he doesn't. Other critics, including Gianni Brunoro, Fabio Gadducci, Gianfranco Goria, Francesco Manetti, Stefano Priarone, Mirko Tavosanis, gave us their views on Don Rosa, thus enriching the book with sidebars containing more interpretations and opinions. Well-known index-master Harry Fluks completed the work with very accurate indices listing all of Don's Disney stories, all of Don's Disney covers and a summary of his pre-Disney work. Finally Byron Erickson, Don Rosa's editor, honoured us with an inspired preface.

We dedicated all our energies to this book. We did it with passion and enthusiasm, like the comic fans that we are, and to keep the price of the book down we won't be taking any payments or royalties. Our aim is to celebrate with a fine book the glorious rebirth, with Don Rosa, of the great Disney storytelling tradition - not to make a profit off our fellow fans. We had been thinking about this project for more than a year, but it wasn't easy to find the right publisher. We are very happy with the one we finally chose, Comic Art, who was very supportive all along and even managed to organise a special Don Rosa happening and exhibition at the next Expocartoon, Italy's most important comics convention, where the book will be officially launched next May.

As you may have guessed by now, the book will be published in Italian. But here is a sneak preview of what you might one day read if we ever manage to attract the attention of an English-language publisher. Or if you eventually decide to learn the language of Don's grandfather.
