Interaction Design Supervision 1

Exercises

Note that I've used some very old exam questions for this supervision. They don't use exactly the same terms as the current course, but you should be able to recognise what they're asking you to do. Let me know if anything's unclear.

  1. 1994 Paper 8 Question 6
  2. 1996 Paper 7 Question 13
  3. For each of the following situations, how might you design a good interface? Include in your answer who you would interact with, which tasks you would have these people perform, and how the knowledge you gained from this interaction would influence the design.
    1. In-flight entertainment software has hundreds of films available to watch, but there is only space to show information about 6 at any one time.
    2. The user interface for the checkout in a small independent bookshop.
    3. Inventory management software for a large multinational supermarket.
    4. Redesigning the user interface for a photo-sharing website with millions of users.
  4. Consider your answer to part d) above. The website owners would like to put a greater emphasis on online image editing.
    1. Give three design principles and three design guidelines relevant to the situation.
    2. For an existing photo-sharing website, create a low-fidelity prototype of a new interface for editing images. The prototype should be able to take the user from the homepage right through to an edited image.
You do not need to submit your prototype with your supervision work, but please have it accessible during the supervision so we can test it together.
