R02 ACS MPhil - Network Architectures First Essay (due Nov 9) Accountability & Anonymity This essay is about two shortcomings in the Internet, and the tension between them. Currently, there are no user-identifying fields in the network (IP) and transport (TCP) layers of the Internet Protocols. This leads to the possibility of weak anonymity, but at the same time, fails to meet the requirement for possibly Accountability (for billing or authorisation or traceback in the event of attacks, etc). There have been proposals to address each of these challenges: Accountable Internet Protocol, Sigcomm 2008: https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1402997 An ISP-Scale Deployment of TapDance, FOCI 17: https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/foci17/foci17-paper-frolov_0.pdf The purpose of this essay is to comment on each of these papers separately, but also to consider the potential clash between these efforts. As per the general rules, essays are 2-4 pages, should cite all sources, and can be in note form - the use of tables (for comparisons) and diagrams (for clarity) is encouraged.
