Early Career Researchers
Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships
For those with up to 3 years post PhD, in any engineering-related field. Funding for 5 years, covering directly incurred, allocated, estates and indirect costs. Annual closing date in October, but only 2 applicants are permitted per institution. The University runs an internal prioritisation exercise.
Royal Commission 1851 Research Fellowships
For those with up to 3 years post PhD in any science or engineering discipline. Funding for up to three years, with salary of approx £30K, and £3K p.a. towards additional costs. Annual call. Applications for 2015 will open on 1 Oct 2014.
Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships
Provides 50% salary costs over three years for those within 5 years of their PhD. The Isaac Newton Trust provides matched funds within Cambridge, and applications must be submitted there first. The Leverhulme deadline is normally March, with the INT deadline approx. 5 weeks before (late January).
Royal Society University Research Fellowships
For those with 3-8 years of research experience since their PhD. Covers 80% of basic salary costs (up to £39K), estates and indirects, and research expenses. Funding is for 5 years with a possible 3 year extension. Annual call in the autumn.
Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships
For early career researchers (no more than 6 years post PhD) who require a flexible working pattern. Covers 80% of basic salary costs (up to £39K), estates and indirects, and research expenses. Funding is for 5 years.
Newton International Fellowships - incoming only
Incoming fellowships in any discipline, for those who have been based outside of the UK for at least one year prior to application. £24K for subsistence and £8K for research per annum for two years. Applicants should have no more than 7 years postdoc experience. Annual call in spring.
Marie Curie Individual Fellowships
Funding is for 1-2 years, for researchers who have at least 4 years postdoc experience. Likely Sept deadline in 2015.
Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowships
Up to £45K over 3-24 months. Particularly for those who are or have been prevented by routine duties from completing a programme of original research.
RAEng/Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship
Funds a replacement lecturer for up to one year to allow the holder to concentrate on full-time research. Annual call in early autumn.
Marie Curie Individual Fellowships
Holders must relocate to an institution outside of the UK, which can be within or outside Europe. Funding for 1-2 years. Outside EU moves also require a 1 year mandatory return to the EU afterwards. 2014 deadline is 11th Sept, with another call due in 2015.
Oxford: All Souls Visiting Fellowships
Fellowships for one, two or three terms, with dining rights and accommodation included, but not salary. Applicants normally hold a University post elsewhere.
Belgium: Universite Libre de Bruxelles
Grants for postdocs with a PhD within the last 5 years from Cambridge (or Oxford) to undertake postdoctoral research at ULB for up to 12 months. Annual call in early Spring.
Germany: Volkswagen Foundation Fellowships
Funding for at least 5 years for those with up to 5 years postdoctoral experience. Prior to submission, applicants must already have instigated a relationship with their potential host University or Institute. Autumn 2014 and spring 2016 closing dates.
Germany: Humboldt Fellowships
The Humboldt Foundation offers fellowships for both postdocs (PhD within 4 years) and experienced researchers (PhD within 12 years) in German Research Institutions. 6-18 months for experienced staff (and can be taken as up to 3 stays over 3 years), 6-24 months for postdocs. Rolling applications, no closing date.
They also offer the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award for those who have completed their doctorate within 6 years. This is particularly targeted at female researchers.
The Netherlands: Veni Fellowships
Annual call in winter (January closing) for those within 3 years of their PhD to hold a fellowship at a Dutch Institution. Fellowships are for 3 years and up to €250,000.
Europe: Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics Alain Bensoussan Fellowships
Twelve month fellowship to be spent in one of the ERCIM institutes, and outside of the country of nationality. For those within 8 years of their PhD.
US: Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowships
Funding for one year (up to $75K plus research allowance and relocation support) to undertake interdisciplinary research at the Institute. Annual call with late autumn deadline.
Japan: Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowships
JSPS offers short term (1-12 months) and standard (12-24 months) fellowships for those within 5 years of their PhD to undertake cooperative research with leading Japanese groups. The application is made by the host academic, and includes travel, subsistence and a contribution towards research calls. There are 4 calls annually for short term fellowships, and 2 calls annually for standard fellowships (May and Sept).
Japan: Pathway to University Positions
For those within 10 years of their PhD and with aspirations of a full-time position in Japan at the end of the fellowship. The application is made by the host institution. Support for two years, including travel, subsistence and research costs. Annual call.
Japan: Toshiba Fellowship Programme
Funding for one year in the first instance, to undertake a research fellowship with Toshiba in Japan. For those with no more than 10 years postdoctoral experience. Annual call with initial deadline in December.
Singapore: National Research Foundation
