Animated Paper Documents

A three year EPSRC project forms part of a general research programme on human-computer interaction. The goal of this research is to investigate and implement new methods for human-computer interaction, and to apply and evaluate their use in the specific discipline of electronic publishing.

The work builds on an earlier collaboration with the Rank Xerox Research Centre in Cambridge (EuroPARC) on the DigitalDesk - an ordinary desk augmented with a computer display using projection television and a video camera to monitor inputs. A number of prototype systems have been implemented to demonstrate its feasibility. This research will investigate the technology further, address issues of performance and explore and evaluate its application to electronic publishing. In particular, it will be used to develop a strategy for combining electronic and printed documents to give a richer presentation than that afforded by either separate medium. This also relates to work in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Cambridge on educational computing materials, especially interactive courseware and Computer Illustrated Texts.

These pages contain information about the work carried out so far, some software (generally GNU copylefted) developed for the project, demos from the test phases of the software (which usually take the form of variously silly net.goodies), and links to homepages and sites associated with or relevant to the project.
