DTG Research
The Digital Technology Group (DTG) is a research group within the Computer Laboratory, and continues to maintain close links with, and includes members of, the Engineering Department. The scope of research conducted within the lab ranges from analysis of communications media at the physical level to development of novel devices and their applications.
The DTG was originally called the Open Media Group, and was located within the Computer Laboratory as part of the Systems Research Group. The group changed its name to the Laboratory for Communication Engineering when it became part of the Engineering Department in 1997. In October 2004 the DTG re-located back to the Computer Laboratory; the DTG continues to maintain close links with, and includes members of the Engineering Department.
As well as research into techniques for supporting conventional network applications, the lab also has extensive experience with a wide range of wireless networks, as well as with more esoteric network technologies. At the applications level, the lab is particularly well-known for its work on pervasive, sentient and mobile computing systems. Research in this area is driven by contemporary commercial improvements in the miniaturisation, performance and price of microprocessor-controlled and networked consumer devices.
Much of the work done at the Laboratory for Communication Engineering is funded and supported by industrial partners. This close association with industry gives the DTG the opportunity to put research ideas into practice.
