Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Wireless networks are becoming increasingly ubiqutous. For example there are wide area cellular networks and relatively short range wireless local area networks (WLAN s) often located in homes, offices and 'hotspots'. In addition, fixed, usually battery powered wireless nodes can be deployed in particular environments to form a so called 'sensor' network. Each type of network offers varying trade-offs concerning throughput, communication range, mobility and battery lifetime. Consequently issues arrise concerning the particular network a user should connect to, and how to achieve mobility between different networks. These problems are being addressed in a project which is using location information and SIP to achieve seamless mobility in heterogeneous networks.
