Computer Laboratory PhD thesis repository ----------------------------------------- Markus Kuhn -- 2009-06-11 We use the directory /usr/groups/studentadmin/PhD_theses/ = \\filer\studentadmin\PhD_theses\ in order to keep PDF copies of PhD thesis that were submitted to the Computer Laboratory Degree Committee. These dissertations are only intended for local use within the Computer Laboratory. They were not intended to be released to the general public on the Internet. (Authors who wish to do the latter should consider submitting their thesis as a Computer Laboratory Technical Report: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/techreports/submission.html) Each thesis is deposited with a filename of the form crsid_thesis.pdf where "crsid" is the author's University-wide login name. It is important to strictly stick to that naming convention, otherwise the file will not be listed correctly on the automatically generated page http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/local/phd/list/ Ideally the files in this directory should represent the final version of the thesis that has ended up as a hard-bound copy in the University Library, including all corrections required by the examiners. However, in some cases, we no longer know the status of the only available PDF, and in this case we deposit here whatever we have. If a PDF is available for both the version initially submitted to the examiners and for the final version with all corrections, the former should be placed into the subdirectory "1st_submission". This subdirectory can also be used to hold submissions still to be approved by the Degree Committee. Workflow: - When submitting a thesis for examination, the author also sends a PDF version to Lise Gough, who will save it as \\filer\studentadmin\PhD_theses\1st_submission\crsid_thesis.pdf - If the final version is identical to the initially submitted version, Lise Gough simply moves \\filer\studentadmin\PhD_theses\1st_submission\crsid_thesis.pdf to the parent directory: \\filer\studentadmin\PhD_theses\crsid_thesis.pdf - If the final version differs from the version initially submitted to the examiners, the author provides another PDF to Lise Gough, who will save it as \\filer\studentadmin\PhD_theses\crsid_thesis.pdf She can then keep or delete the older 1st_submission\crsid_thesis.pdf version at her discretion.
