University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory Minutes of the 83rd Health and Safety Committee Meeting held on Wednesday 19th September 2001 in GC22 Present: P Brooks (Chairman), P A Neaves, M A Levitt, W Clocksin, K Wheddon (Secretary), P J L Crofts, C Bean, K Crofts Apologies: G Titmus 0. New Members Caroline Bean and Kate Crofts were welcomed to the meeting. Although not formal representatives, they should be in positions to raise matters relating to assistant staff and people in the Marconi area of the building respectively. 1. Items for Any Other Business None 2. Any Corrections to Previous Minutes None 3. Accidents and matters arising from Accident Reports NR003. Two members of staff slipped on the stairs but didn't injure themselves. A workman had spilt some paint, and used some oil based cleaner. 4. Personnel and Workplace Assessment Referral Forms None 5. Matters Arising from Previous Minutes 5.1 (5.1) West Cambridge Site PJLC had a discussion about the Health and Safety Representation in the West Cambridge Site. There is one in Physics and it was left for PB to talk further. Action PB 5.2 (5.2) VDU Workstation Assessment Training course for Assessors PJLC is still to put forward the revised version of the VDU Assessment Document as a proposed University Document. Action PJLC 5.3 (5.3) Roles Relating to Health and Safety No. 17-18 - MAL, KW and RH met and worked on a new unified Assistant Staff and Academic Related Induction Form. This will be discussed at the next meeting. The committee ran out of time. 5.4 (6.1) Female First Aider Caroline Bean has been appointed as our female first aider and will be taking a 4 day First Aid Course in November. 6. Any Other Business None 7. Correspondence 7.1 The Health and Safety Policy Document PB obtained a copy of the Health and Safety Document from the Computing Service. GT will revise it for the Computer Laboratory. Action:GT 7.2 Manual Handling Training Course The Manual Handling Training Course is still to be sorted out. Action: PAN, PB, S Cooper 7.3 Attendance at CS Meetings PB will no longer attending CS meetings, as we are no longer resident in the New Museum Site Building and the meeting times clash with other meetings. 7.4 Items relating to the new building Various items relating to the new building were discussed and are listed in note form on the attached sheet. 8. Date for future Meeting Meeting will take place at 14:15 in GC22 on the third Wednesday of every month unless stated otherwise:- 17th October, 21st November, 19th December PB/KW 24th September 2001 Non William Gates Building related The Committee welcomed CB to be a new representative from the "secretaries". RS intro Tue 2 / Wed 3 Oct 2001 -- attend Risk Assessment only on Wed Cryogenic hazards, working safely with animals, safe workshop practice, Laser safety, Working safely with ionising radiation, local arrangements and compliance with ionising radiations, safety during field work, microbiological hazards, glass and sharps hazards, centrifuge safety and pressure systems. Should someone draw confirm what each RS is doing? Move: New Building, etc. We are delighted to report that there were no injuries to members of the department during the move. It was thought by the committee that the Gravel in the cycle park was a safety concern that should be addressed. Concerns were raised over the lack of air flow. We have been told that there is no easy way to check that the air flow is according to spec, and that the flows have not yet been tuned. The committee decided that it should wait and see after a period of time once the department has settled in properly. Fire: It was decided that PB and PAN would have a walk round of the building. We also decided that after the fire events of the week that there was no great rush for a practice fire alarm. Assembly points are thought to be decided by the University Fire Officer. It was agreed that the fire notices from the University would be put at every call point. Statutory poster - Under discussion Plan of routes which need to be clear - Under discussion A user reported that the alarms are not loud enough. It was thought that maybe we could do a test in each part of the building to see where the faults were. Lifts: CONE will be maintaining the Lifts for 1 year and then it will be under discussion. It was also asked when will there be a "Hand Winding" Course. This needs to be discussed with Engineering as well. 125462 Multiple Lights ? Do we have details of the phone usage? 1st Aid: The location of the first aid boxes were discussed and thought that there should be one in Reception, one in cb210, one in PAN, then some wall mounted. C/E Junction, Workshop Areas, Near the Café and near the Lecture Theatres. Room: sharps + soiled bins; supplies of plasters The committee all agreed to leave the key to the First Aid Room in reception. There was quite a bit of discussion about having a window open in the First Aid Room but we came to no decisions. mutual backup -- need trips to other departments? At the moment the Computer Laboratory First Aid Meetings are in a group near town. PB is going to ask to be changed to another group.
