Introduction

The backplane is a passive device which sits at the back of a crate and connects the Port Controllers or DAN devices to the switch fabric. It also distributes global signals. It consists of two electrically isolated 4 by 4 switches and two such backplanes can be used to make a 16 by 16 switch.
